After many revisions, fine tunings, and proofreading sessions our paper titled Entangled Quantum Key Distribution Over Two Free-Space Optical Links is up on the arXiv! The image resolution especially for the QBER and key rate graphs isn't the greatest since I had to do some massive image compression so that the arXiv didn't complain about the file size too much. Much higher res images will be available in the published article hopefully very soon. At the very least, it's a huge relief to finally have my FIRST article out there! Now I can finally move on to the next experiment we've had in mind for a long while, stay tuned this Fall 2008 for it... dun dun duh =)

Well hopefully this is the last all nighter I have to pull for some time while I baby sit my QKD system during the night. Running the full 2 free-space link entangled QKD system tonight to PI and IQC (BFG building). The error rates look even better then Saturday! Though the actually entangled pair detection rates are lower. Also finished moving most things into the IQC's new home in the RAC building on North Campus at UW.

So I guess I've accepted that this website will only be updated sporadically, my appologies for that, I'm just not a good webmaster :P Anyways, I do have some news! Real QKD is happening!!! I've been trying for basically the last month to get the full 2 link system working and it's felt like everything under the sun has gone wrong. I've been madly working towards this before we have to get out of BFG by April 30th. I want to do it at BFG at least once because the link to BFG is very strong (since it's a shorter distance) and offsets the horrible link to PI (going over the vent from the Physics building was not the best of ideas :P) So finally on thursday I solved the last of my problems - never EVER mount beamsplitters with wax that needs to be heated, beamsplitters, specifically polarizing beamsplitters DO NOT like to be heated. I basically wrecked them taking them in and out. So over the last 3 days I've been running a full 2 free-space link entangled photon Quantum Key Distribution system. I've done 2 links to adjacent offices at BFG on Thursday night, one link to PI on Friday night, and currently doing 2 links (one to PI and one to BFG) tonight! I'll put up graphs of bit error rates and key rates soon once I've had a chance to analyze the data but it looks good!

My QKD system was featured in an article in the Waterloo Record! You can read the full article here.

So apparently I'm horrible at keeping this website up to date. So I'm going to do my best to add all of my basic content, so things like publications and things are up to date at least. I do have a bit of an excuse for being lax, I recently got engaged this summer and then spent almost a month in Europe, so I had my hands full. Anyways, here's the first update to the site in a while.

Sorry for the lack of news, I've been completely consumed by writing up my Masters thesis in time for my defence, which occurs in a little over a week.
Lots more stuff has happened on the project, all of which will be describe after the defence.
In the meantime, I have posted my thesis (sans experimental results which I now get to work on furiously over the next week) on the Quantum Key Distribution main page under project files.

Alright, so this is horribly out of date, but I will update it shortly
Tons of stuff has happened on the project, will upload pictures, and retroactively put some milestones in this News section.

Demonstrated the first successful QKD link from Bob sitting with the source on top of the CEIT building to Alice sitting with a receiver in the BFG building!!
Wednesday, September 7th, 2006
Demonstrated the first successful QKD experiment over one 30ft telescope link in the laboratory.
Thursday, June 22nd, 2006
Did some first telescope tests from the actual CEIT site where the source will be housed. The beam looks pretty good in terms of wander from CEIT to BFG, not as great to PI but should still hopefully work.

First successful QKD experiment demonstration on the optical table. It is not the prettiest since you need to collect data with an older VB6 program and then anaylze it in my new C# code, but it works =)
Fall, 2005
Finally got the Parametric Down-Conversion source of polarization entangled photons set up correctly and reading coincidence pairs. Verified an entangled source by violating Bell's inequality.

Well my first official day as a grad student at the IQC was Monday, April 25th.
All done Undergrad as of Monday.
